Sobhengu was developed by the Gooderson Leisure Corporation (GLC), the largest independent leisure group in KwaZulu-Natal with business interests in: The Tropicana and Beach Hotels; Silversands 1, 11 & 111, (R.C.I.); The Drakensberg Gardens Golf and Leisure Resort incorporating The Drakensberg Gardens Hotel, Fairways chalets (R.C.I., Gold Crown), Glencarry Country Club and Golf Estate, Riverbend Chalets (R.C.I., R.I.D.) and Mountain View Chalets (R.C.I.); Bushlands Game Lodge (Zululand); Dumazulu Traditional Village (Zululand); Tulani Safari Lodge (Balule Conservancy near Phalaborwa) and Zululand Tours and Safaris (the oldest independent touring company in South Africa).

 

E.I.A. imposed design criteria.

On arrival in Sobhengu Bay one is hard pressed to spot the development in the forest. This is because strict design criteria were laid down by an Environmental Impact Assessment (E.I.A.) to minimise any impacts on the fragile Sand Forest ecosystem. With development limited 12 self-catering chalets (Sobhengu Lake Lodge) and an 11 bedroom eco-lodge (Nibela Lake Lodge hotel), exclusivity is guaranteed.

Low Density of guests

The low density of guests permitted on the property at any one time is undoubtedly one of the most appealing features of this development as it allows for a high degree of privacy and a unique eco-experience.

Nibela Lake Lodge hotel

Nibela Lake Lodge caters predominantly for the discerning international eco-tourist. No children under 12 are allowed. Luxurious bedrooms are individually situated in the forest with superb views out over the lake. Raised wooden walkways reaching canopy height in places meander through the forest linking the bedrooms to the main complex.

Sobhengu Lake Lodge

Within walking distance of the Nibela Lodge hotel complex is Sobhengu Lodge, the self-catering timeshare and syndication component of the development. Here spacious thatched chalets rest privately on stilts amongst the trees of the Sand Forest overlooking Sobhengu Bay. Raised wooden walkways link the chalets to the shore and main complex. Wide wooden decks offer panoramic views over the Tewate Wilderness Area and into the surrounding forest. Each superbly appointed and tastefully decorated chalet has huge picture windows and sliding doors to ensure oneness with the forest. An enclosed boma with storeroom, outdoor shower, braai and sunken fireplace guarantees total privacy under African skies. All units are serviced each day.

Chalet configurations available are:

1. Two, 4-sleeper chalets each with an open plan lounge/kitchen, 1 bedroom, a loft room, 1 bathroom and a private boma. Ownership available on a timeshare basis only.
2. Two, 6-sleeper chalets each with an open plan lounge/kitchen, 2 bedrooms, a loft room, 2 bathrooms and a private boma. Ownership available on timeshare basis only.
3. Four, 8-sleeper chalets (360 sq.m) each with an open plan lounge/dining/kitchen area, four en suite bedrooms and a private boma. Two chalets are available on a timesharing basis and two on syndication.
   

Amenities

A swimming pool next to the shoreline is available to take the sting out of St. Lucia's hot summer days. Sobhengu owners and guests can make use of the restaurant and pub facility at the hotel.
