Verlorenkloof Estate is in the heart of the Trout Triangle
The Trout Triangle.

Verlorenkloof Estate is located in the heart of The Trout Triangle. This malaria free area, roughly demarcated by a line joining the towns of Lydenburg, Belfast and Waterval Boven, is less than 3 h drive from Gauteng and is home to some of the finest trout fishing venues in the Country. Central to the Trout Triangle is the Kwena Basin.

The Kwena Basin - where friendships are born.

The Kwena Basin is a unique area of South Africa where trout breed naturally in pristine clear streams and magnificent indigenous forests abounding with bird and animal life adorn rugged mountain slopes. The climate is temperate and the region is steeped in both ancient and more recent history.

The Crocodile River - where Rainbows breed naturally.

The hamlet of Dullstroom is considered by many to be the trout mecca of South Africa. The so-called "stroom" of Dullstroom happens to be the Crocodile River which rises in the Verlorenvalley Nature Reserve not far from the village. Not long after flowing past Dullstroom, the Crocodile River cascades over the rugged Steenkampsberg Escarpment into a secluded valley in the very heart of the Trout Triangle. This beautiful valley which forms part of the Kwena Basin Conservancy is home to Verlorenkloof Estate. This stunning property not only straddles the Steenkamspberg escarpment but adjoins a 6 km stretch of the Upper Crocodile — a stretch of river rated as the best to fly-fish for Wild Rainbows in Mpumulanga.

Lydenburg

The closest commercial centre to Verlorenkloof is town of Lydenburg which not only happens to be the oldest town in Mpumulanga but also one of the foremost trout and coarse fishing centres in South Africa. The town boasts:

  • The largest fly tying and fishing lure factory in South Africa.
  • The De Kuilen Trout Hatchery which is the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.
  • The Lydenburg "heads", clay heads dating back 800 years unearthed near the town and forming an important link in the archeological findings of the area.
  • The Lydenburg Waterfall which is rated as the most spectacular in Mpumalanga and drives an electrical generation plant.

The Trout Rich Upper Crocodile River as it Flows Past Verlorenkloof Estate

Verlorenkloof Estate is part of a 1300 ha country retreat in the very heart of the Trout Triangle. This aesthetically splendid property straddles the scenic Steenkampsberg escarpment and forms part of the Kwena Basin Conservancy. It lies approximately 15 km east of Dullstroom as the crow flies and is reached from the Bambi/Lydenburg Road (R36) an easy 2.5 to 3h hours drive from Gauteng,
